About the Artist
The romantic ideal of a dancer in motion has captured the imagination of artist Mario Jason for the las fifteen years, earning him a place as one of the country’s foremost bronze sculptors. Renowned for his representational yet highly interpreting work, his bronze sculptures capture the emotional context of dance. Strong, yet graceful figures appear to lift into the air, trascendió immediate reality and reaching for the ideal.
An impassioned and dedicated sculptor, Jason’s craft is self-taught. Acting as both artist and artisan in a studio-cum-foundry he built in California. Jason devotes all of his time to his art. It is his intuitive understanding of clay and precise control of the bronze medium that allows his sculpture to reflect an amazing grace of form and motion. The opportunity to devote himself to his craft came rather late in the artist’s life. Born in Argentina, Jason was ten the he and his family emigrated to Israel, shortly before the country declared its independence. He attended the School of Drawing an Sculpture in Bat Yam Israel, and followed his studies with a mandatory stint in the Israeli Air Force, Jason moved to the United States in 1962 where his passion for sculpting led him to further schooling at the Otis parson Art Institute in Los Angeles. While the concern to provide for his family remained paramount, Jason forsook a dedication to art until financial success provided him with the opening he’d been waiting for. Finally in 1984, Jason was able to devote himself to his dream of creating artwork and began working full time as a sculptor. The response was immediate and gratifying. He quickly sold four bronzes and began to accept numerous commissions from some of California’s most important private and public art collectors.
Jason’s pursuit of perfection is legendary. He is the one of the few artists in the world who acts as both master craftsman and artist, overseeing the bronze process from start to finish. He is the mold maker, the foundry man and the finisher for each of his sculptures which accounts for their beautiful patinas and unvaryingly high quality.
Always involving, Jason is exploring new Chanels for his work. He has begun several new series including translating his figurative forms to the print medium. He has also been commissioned to create a monument to the Holocaust, just one of several new works in progress in which he will use his gift for detail to explore the emotional context of life.
