Celina Hinojosa is a distinguished Texas-born artist whose work vividly captures the cultural essence of Deep South Texas through the Mexican American experience. Based in San Antonio, Hinojosa’s artistic journey began in Brownsville, where she first explored music as a promising pianist before discovering her passion for painting at thirteen. By sixteen, she had sold her first piece, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the visual arts.

 

She earned her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied under acclaimed mentors and interned with nationally known illustrator Tom Curry, mastering the dry-brush technique that would become her signature. She later received her MS in Art from Texas A&M–Kingsville, further refining her technical and conceptual approach under Professor Richard Schepereel.

 

Hinojosa’s career spans technical drafting, illustration, education, and fine art, including work with major New York publishers in children’s bilingual literature. In 1996, she returned to her original calling - painting full-time - and began developing a body of work that explores “Vanishing Border Traditions.” Her paintings are known for their intimate figurative portrayals, often set in kitchens, cantinas, and rural ranchitos, capturing solitary moments with emotional depth and cultural resonance.

 

Her studio, located in the historic San Fernando Hotel in Brownsville, became a creative sanctuary for over two decades. It was during this time that she earned the nickname “The Border Lautrec” by an art scholar, a nod to her focus on nightlife and street characters, reminiscent of Toulouse-Lautrec’s Parisian scenes. Hinojosa’s work is deeply rooted in the traditions, rituals, and everyday lives of South Texas communities, rendered in rich colors and layered textures that reflect her mastery of acrylic on canvas and, more recently, works on paper.

 

As a cultural narrative painter, Hinojosa’s mission is to preserve and honor the lived experiences of her people - “Mi Gente.” Her art has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in the long (touring) exhibition Estampas de la Raza under the auspices of the McNay Museum of San Antonio, Texas. Her contributions to Chicano Art History have been documented in award-winning publications and educational volumes with the support of The Center for Latino Initiatives of the Smithsonian Institute; used from elementary classrooms to graduate programs – by novice collectors to art aficionados.

 

Celina Hinojosa continues to work independently, accepting select commissions while maintaining a disciplined studio practice. Her work invites viewers to engage with the stories, struggles, and spirit of a region often overlooked in mainstream art, offering a poignant and powerful lens into the soul of South Texas.
